Tannery Modernization Scheme Launched

Tannery Modernization Scheme, which aims to provide financial assistance to modernization programmes of tanneries, was launched by the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Murasoli Maran on 18 January 2000.

The financial assistance under the scheme will be to the extent of 30 per cent of cost of plant and machinery for small-scale units (subject to ceiling of Rs.28 lakhs) and 20 per cent of cost, plant and machinery for other units (subject to ceiling of Rs.35 lakhs). Small Industries Development of India will be the nodal agency of the scheme and would pass on the cases that do not come under its purview to Industrial Development Bank of India.

The modernization programme of the tannery units, should either be financed by bank or financial institution, or self-financed in order to be eligible for this scheme. Around 350 units are expected to benefit from this scheme, which will be managed by a Steering Committee, comprising of the programme management unit of Small Industries Development and Employment Programme in leather sector. The Steering Committee would lay down procedures, decide normative costs, accord sanction of financial assistance from government, and monitor and follow up disbursal of financial assistance. The total outlay envisaged is Rs.40.75 crore ($9.70 million) of which the Government's assistance will be Rs.964.60 lakh ($2.30 million).
