Quality split based leather in China

Irving Tanning Company, a leading split tanning company from the United States, recently set up split tanning facilities in Cuangzhou, China. It would, however, continue to import hides from Irving Tanneries in the US, because the cow hides from Asia, are not as thick or wide as those from the west. It may be noted that Asia does not hold a good record for making quality leather based on splits. The available splits usually go into the production of low-end footwear, whereas in Europe and America they are used in high priced garments and leather goods such as handbags and travel goods.

Chemical Testing Laboratory at FDDI

A Chemical Testing Laboratory, commissioned by German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, was set up at the Footwear Development and Design Institute. The lab would provide testing services to the leather manufacturers exporting to European Union. European Union has strict standards against certain chemicals, such as pentachlorophenol and chrome IV, used in the manufacture of leather. Besides there is an increasing preference for environment-friendly products in European markets. Reliable testing facilities, at this point, is expected to provide a valuable service to leather industry, and facilitate exports.
