Leather exporters feel that the decision to tax exporters could not have come in a worse time. Leather demand seems to have hit the bottom this season, with American and European markets evincing little or no interest in Indian leather. The few orders that showed promise got hit on the price front; the buyers - mostly from Spain - offered to buy goat suede and sheep nappa at too low a price. On the top of it, a budget indifferent to leather industry and adverse to exporters. But there is no reason why this spell should continue. There are a number of sampling orders in process, for leather and leather products. Infact, some have already materialised: garments made out of goat CD selection suedes and ABC selections are being exported to Spain and Italy. Besides, the large scale modernization programs, which seem to be likely, spell very good for the long term prospects of the industry. |
